MASL 3 recap: NoVA top Fredericksburg; Kings win OT thriller

by Scott Ludwig

In a 2022 MASL 3 championship game rematch, NoVA FC and Fredericksburg Fire met for the second time last weekend at the Fredericksburg Field House. The defending champion NoVA proved they are still the team to beat as they earned a 12-9 victory.

This one had a very familiar feel to that April championship final with the Fire building an early lead. Andreas Garcia and Uriah Bentick scored first before NoVA got on the board. Goals by Lucas Mendes and Liam Emson had the home side leading 4-2 at the end of one quarter.

NoVA took command of the game in the second though, outscoring the Fire 5-0 to lead 7-4 at the halftime break.

Brandon Clegg led the NoVA offense with five goals. Johnny De Souza and Ahmed Sheta each added a pair for NoVA (4-1-0) who now sit atop the MASL 3 table.

Fredericksburg were led by Emson who scored three times while Bentick and Garcia chipped in with two goals each.

Baltimore Kings hosted Philadelphia Spartans in the other Saturday matchup which ended in thrilling fashion. Tony Araviakis scored three times – including the OT game winner – for the Kings (1-2-0) who secured their first victory of the season winning 5-4.
