Philadelphia Spartans, Fredericksburg Fire open M3 season with wins
If opening weekend is any indication, the race for the Major Arena Soccer League regular season title could be a real battle.
Defending champion NOVA FC traveled to Philadelphia, where they fell to the Spartans, while the Fredericksburg Fire spoiled the Baltimore Kings debut at Coppermine Du Burns Arena, 7-6. Following is a recap
Philadelphia Spartans 8, NOVA FC 6
The Spartans snapped a 5-5 tie early in the fourth quarter by scoring three unanswered g.oals to take and 8-6 win.
Jason Rocha got the go-ahead goal just over a minute into the final frame, completing a four-goal game for the Spartans. Bryan Calabali got the game winner with 9:52 to play -- his third of the night -- fore Darius Madison got an insurance marker less than two minutes later.
Madison also added two assists for a three-point evening, while Lucas De Sa assisted on the final two Philly goals.
Junior Kadio scored twice to lead the NOVA FC attack, Johnny Desousa and Brandon Williams chipped in with a goal and assist each.
Fredericksburg Fire 7, Baltimore Kings 6
It was the Uriah Bentrck show, at least as far as Fredericksburg was concerned, The Fire forward matched Jason Rocha's effort in Philadelphia's win over NOVA FC, netting four goals at Du Burns Arena. He also picked up an assist for a five-point effort.
Lucas Mendes had a goal and two assists while the winner came from Keith Witherell. Henry Scott scored twice for the Kings.
